Power from the wind and tide
There are so many systems exploiting renewable energy sources, including harness wind and ocean currents. Now, the engineering firm Modec (Japan) said it would test system combining solar collector SKWID in both kinds of wind and ocean currents at sea
SKWID is a compact floating on the sea surface. Submerged beneath part of device is the tidal turbine exploiting the floats Savonius, and the floated part in the air of its is wind turbine Darrieus. Both are associated with the center box and generator, so SKWID can harness the energy of the wind or the tides, or both at the same time. Also rotation from tidal turbine engine can help to support the wind turbines when the wind is too light.
Darrieus wind turbine is designed to rotate left or right so rotation activities do not depend on the wind direction. Meanwhile tidal turbine Savonius only turns in one direction but can operate despite small trickles of water in the ocean.
According to Gizmag magazine, there were some SKWID system has been installed, tested off the coast of Japan with 47 m high wind turbines on the sea and tidal turbine has a diameter of 15 m in the sea, both in collaboration enough to provide energy for 300 homes. |
