Reducing the risk of flooding with Japanese technology

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) signed a non-refundable aid agreement with a total value of more than 410 billion VND for the project "Operation of reservoirs in emergency and effective flood management by a comprehensive disaster management information system."

Coastal Central Vietnam where storms often land, so each year suffered losses due to floods and landslides. In order to prevent human loss and economic loss, disaster prediction is becoming an urgent matter. Huong river basin area in Thua Thien - Hue province (where heavy rain is concentrated) is also a frequent source of flood damage due to unreasonable discharge from heavy rain.
The project is implemented over a period of 24 months with the objective of setting up a system to operate and manage three large dams (Binh Dien, Huong Dien and Ta Trach) in combination with natural disaster prevention in the Huong river basin; establish a comprehensive disaster prevention information network and appropriate emergency forecasting and warning measures; Complete the reservoir operation process in the Huong river basin ..., thereby enhancing the river and dam management capacity, and improving the prevention and mitigation of water-related disasters.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Van Thang said that the project was implemented not only provides facilities for flood forecasting and warning in the Huong river basing but also opens a new approach both in terms of technology and methods of flood prevention. Successful results of the project will be disseminated and replicated throughout the country. |
