The decision was signed by Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hai, Chairman of Binh Thuan People's Committee, in the morning of 7/5. Relevant departments and localities are urgently requested to immediately implement response measures, in order to limit damage to production and people's daily life; mobilize all forces to transport household water, not to let people lack drinking water due to drought.
Water stored in irrigation systems is also in short supply. Many irrigation lakes dried up, inert bottom. So far, the whole system is only about 27.4 million m3, less than 11% of the designed capacity; only 1/3 compared to the average of many years in the same period, and only 31% compared to the time of the drought in 2016.
According to Binh Thuan People's Committee, localities in the province are coping with drought. Farmers do not have production water. In the recent Winter-Spring crop, the whole province had to cut more than 15,400 hectares of rice to prioritize water sources for household water, drinking water for poultry and perennial crops.
Currently, many areas of perennial crops in Bac Binh, Ham Thuan Bac, Ham Thuan Nam and Ham Tan do not have irrigation water sources for irrigation. Thousands of hectares of dragon fruits have shrunken their branches, many gardens withered due to lack of water for a long time, causing heavy losses to local farmers.
Household water is also seriously lacking, especially in districts of Bac Binh, Ham Thuan Bac, Ham Thuan Nam and Ham Tan. According to the report of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, by the end of April, the whole province had 38 communes, wards and towns lacking local water. More than 26,000 families with more than 97,000 people in rural areas are short of household water. |
