'Smart Sponge' Dispenses Insulin Automatically
An injectable sponge could bring a new level of relief to diabetes sufferers by automatically releasing insulin as needed.
A team from North Carolina State University developed the sponge using chitosan, the material found in the shells of crustaceans, to surround a core of insulin. As the material contracts and expands in response to changing blood sugar levels, the insulin is released as needed.
The team also believes the sponge could be adapted to for smart delivery of drugs to treat cancer and other diseases.
