Plant protection institute under Viet Nam Agricultural Science Academy announced that they collected 6 species of harmful cicadas, in which the Dundubia nagarasingna distant species appears with the highest rate in  Đak Lak, Gia Lai and Lam Đong.

In fact, chicken breeding in range of coffee plantation has achieved high efficiency in dealing with harmful cicadas. Mr. Bui Sy Hung, a farmer in Lam Dong has one  hectare coffee plantation, surrounded B40 net, he raises 50 chickens in the area to seek for cicadas while the chickens provide back with eggs and meats.

However, chicken’ breeding has its own challenges; particularly in the large area this method seems inefficient. Manual measure is considered as an alternative way to deal with cicadas, as it relies on the sign of appearance of cicadas by focusing on the sounds or the larval shell, these signs often appear under the tree foot or hang on the branches. Cicadas intercourse season (around June to July) and the first rains mark the milestone for cicadas easy-catch time. The farmers are easy to catch them with a bucket of icy watter and a lamp.

Nylon-covered method reduces cicadas’ damages as it prevents larvae creeping in or out of the ground. This method is recommended by Plan Protection Institute, associates with 2% lime water irrigating the tree foot around July to August which speeding up cicadas to creep out of the ground faster.
