The polemo fruit can weigh up to 4.4. pounds, yet survive a fall from a height of over 33 feet. To create their new aluminum hybrid, scientists mimicked the fruit’s peel, which is made up of a graded, fiber-reinforced foam. The result was a material made up of pure aluminum at its center and an outer shell of an aluminum-silicon alloy, which has a high tensile strength. The new material is able to resist breaking and deformation much better than either metal would alone.
