APEC discussed measures to reduce food waste
Within the APEC 2017 Food Security Week took place in Can Tho, technical workshops continued on August 19.

These are workshops of "Building Adaptive Agricultural Production and Consumption Systems - Cross-Sectoral approach to using climate Information for sustainable security"; "The Challenge of food security and water resources in the context of climate change in APEC region" and the capacity improvement Workshop of "Reducing food waste, targeting a sustainable APEC Food System ".

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), there are currently around 800 million people suffering from hunger in the world, in which the number of people in the Asia Pacific is the largest, about 500 million people. The FAO also estimates that one-third of the food produced each year is lost or wasted equivalent of - 1.3 billion tons. This figure is worth nearly 750 billion dollars a year. If we reduce food waste completely, we would have enough food to feed two billion people. Not to mention the negative impact on the environment of food waste when agricultural production consumes a lot of energy, water, fertilizer and loses a part of forest land.

Most food losses occur during post-production, harvesting, transport and storage, which are closely related to the lack of infrastructure in developing economies, while wasting food is in marketing and consumption in the more developed economies.

Three groups of solutions were also agreed by the delegates at the meeting: Management should establish national committees to promote cross-sectoral coordination; The river basin council and river basin planning is an effective coordination mechanism; Apply advanced and technical technologies, such as real time measurements to increase water use efficiency and local communities, and decision-making decentralization is essential for the implementation of integrated water resources management.

The outcome of the above-mentioned conferences is very important for the official conference of the Policy and Food Security Partners on August 21.
