Mekong Delta: Saline drought peaked in late February
The reduction of Chinese hydroelectricity discharge, which lasted in January up to now, has affected water and salinity to the second high stage in the full moon of January in the Mekong Delta.

According to the forecast of water resources in the Mekong Delta of the Southern Institute of Irrigation Science, due to the effect of reducing water discharge from January 5-24, 2021 from Chinese hydroelectricity to about 1000 m³ / s and still low discharge, which affected the Mekong Delta in late January and February.

It is about to enter the period of peak influence in late February due to prolonged low discharge combined with high tide. It is forecasted that from February 25-28, salinity of 4g / l can penetrate deep into the main stream, estuaries of Mekong River 48-70km, 75-90km on Vam Co river and 50-55km on Cai Lon river.

Due to the influence of unseasonal rain in the past week, rain scattered in the plain and many parts of the basin, the impact of saline intrusion is less stressful. However, guarding against strong winds can cause sudden salinity increase in the estuaries of the Mekong River.

The Southern Institute of Irrigation Science recommends that localities should take the initiative in coping with severe drought prevention right now. In particular, the region in the middle of the Mekong Delta to prevent the influence of high salinity intrusion this year, proactively reduce the area of the Winter-Spring crop in affected areas in 2020.

Strengthen solutions to protect water sources, store water and pump when needed. When taking sweet or watering plants, it is necessary to closely check the salinity, especially for fruit trees. During the low tides in February, localities actively accumulate water as soon as possible to cope with the reduction of hydroelectricity discharge from China.
