After Luc Ngan lychee was granted geographical indication registration certificate by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam in 2008, the value of lychee fruit increased, the export market expanded, including Japan. However, export of litchi fruit has the disadvantage of having to attach the name of the Japanese product supplier during the sale process. Therefore, with the protection of geographical indications in Japan, Luc Ngan lychee fruit from now is affixed with the geographical indication "Luc Ngan lychee" on products exported to Japan, the added value of the product will be higher, the chance to be trusted and chosen by consumers is higher.
In addition, the product is protected by Japanese law when using this geographical indication in Japan, is not required by other parties to stop using the trademark, and at the same time prohibits parties from using the geographical indication. This is for identical, similar or related products. In addition, the reputation of Luc Ngan lychee which is known by fastidious markets like Japan is an opportunity to expand consumption markets in many other countries with strict import standards in the world. However, even though geographical indications are protected, export to Japan depends a lot on the level of market acceptance, and our compliance with very strict regulations, especially on safe food of your country.
The process of protection registration in Japan started from the construction of product selection criteria, with the participation of many local authorities. After a process of selecting and preparing documents, on June 3, 2016, Japan recorded the application documents for registration of geographical indications for Buon Ma Thuot coffee, Luc Ngan litchi, and Binh Thuan dragon fruit. During the appraisal process, the Japan Food Industry Department established three geographical indications survey teams in Bac Giang, Binh Thuan, and Dak Lak.
From the practice of registering for the protection of geographical indications in Japan shows that the lack of scientific studies and documents of the Luc Ngan Litchi Production and Consumption Association are not recorded and stored, methodical production practice will affect the process of bringing agricultural products to markets, especially fastidious markets. At present, Binh Thuan dragon fruits are also being reworked to continue to register for protection of geographical indications in Japan. Experiences are drawn from the registration of Luc Ngan lychee protection in Japan should soon be disseminated to localities to get the best preparation for agricultural export. |
