Speaking at the opening of the Forum, Ms. Do Thi Phuong Lan, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Economics and Forecasting, said that implementing the Party's policies and orientations, on May 11, 2022, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 569/QD-TTg on "Strategy for development of science, technology and innovation until 2030". In particular, the goal is to increase the contribution of science and technology and innovation to economic growth through scientific research and technological development activities of research institutes and universities, and technological innovation activities, improving management and organizational capacity in enterprises.
On the basis of realizing the set goals, in recent times, many mechanisms and policies to encourage and support businesses to invest in research and technological innovation have been issued and have had positive impacts to help businesses invest in research and technological innovation. Enterprises improve productivity, quality, as well as competitiveness of products and services; Encourage businesses and the private sector to establish research institutes and science and technology enterprises, and etc. Those mechanisms and policies have brought positive results. According to the Global Innovation Index Report 2023 (Global Innovation Index - GII 2023), Vietnam has improved by increasing 2 places, from position 48 to 46/132 countries and economies in global innovation. At the time, it ranked 4th in the ASEAN region and among the top of developing economies. With the above ranking, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has recognized Vietnam as one of the seven middle-income countries that have achieved the most progress in innovation over the past decade, and at the same time, one of the three countries hold the record of outperforming their development level for 13 consecutive years.
Assessing the relative level of development between Vietnam's regions, currently, the locomotives of the innovation startup ecosystem are still the capital Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. According to the Center for Research and Mapping the Global Startup Ecosystem (Startup Blink), these two cities are in the top 200 cities with the most dynamic innovation startup ecosystems globally in 2023 (Ho Chi Minh city ranked 114th, Hanoi ranked 174th). Investment in innovation startups in Vietnam still maintains a relatively good level of development compared to the ASEAN region with 56 projects, total investment capital of nearly 500 million USD in the first 6 months of 2023. So far, Vietnam has a total of 4 technology unicorns valued at over 1 billion USD including: VNG, VNLife, MoMo, Sky Mavis. Among them, VNG and Sky Mavis are prominent names in the online gaming segment.
In addition, with about 3,800 start-up businesses; Over 140 universities and research institutes organize innovative start-up activities with incubators, centers, and start-ups supporting clubs, innovation, and truly creative start-ups demonstrate strong and shape innovation ecosystem in Vietnam. |
