Developing industrial substrates for Sa Dec flower village
In order to take advantage of locally available raw materials, scientists at Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry successfully developed a process to produce quality, disease-free growing substrates suitable for each type of ornamental flower.

This not only helps improve product quality but also brings more than 30% profit to flower growers. Sa Dec flower village, one of the famous flower villages in the Southwest region, with an area of over 500 hectares and hundreds of flower species, has become an attractive destination for tourists and a place to produce fresh flowers in the region.
Previously, flower growing in Sa Dec mainly took place on a small scale, but with fertile soil and the delicate skills of the people, flower growing has developed strongly. To provide growing medium for flowers, farmers often use straw and rice husks, however, the quality of growing medium is still not up to standard due to lack of specificity for different types of flowers and often contains pathogens. To overcome this problem, Dong Thap Department of Science and Technology has cooperated with Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry to research the process of producing growing media on an industrial scale from agricultural by-products.
Through research, the group has developed two types of substrates, MX1 and MX2, from raw materials, such as mushroom residue, coconut peat and cow dung, composted for about 28-35 days under strict quality control conditions. The pilot model showed that economic efficiency increased from 24.4% to 32.4% compared to traditional growing media, and at the same time guided people to carry out the process of making growing substrates on a scale of 10-15 tons per batch of compost, creating conditions for applying and replicating this model to farmers in the area.
