Extracting weight loss active ingredients from green coffee

In order to diversify products from coffee trees, Dr. Le Ngoc Hung and his colleagues at the Center for Research and Technology Transfer, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, have carried out the project "Research on creating weight loss support products from green coffee beans and by-products of coffee processing".

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tat Toan - Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry spoke at the Ceremony.
The project not only aims to increase economic value but also increase income for producers in Dak Nong province, famous for Robusta coffee trees.
To achieve the goal, the research team developed a process to extract chlorogenic acid (CGA) from raw materials including green coffee beans, coffee leaves and coffee fruit pulp. After harvesting, Robusta coffee beans are ground into a fine powder, then extracted with 50% ethanol to obtain a crude CGA extract solution. This crude solution is then purified to remove caffeine and protein, thereby obtaining a refined CGA extract.
Using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD), the research team quantified the CGA content in the raw materials. The results showed that the CGA content in green coffee beans ranged from 7.03 to 11.21%, in coffee leaves from 0.54 to 0.82% and in fruit peel from 1.53 to 1.85%. The CGA content in the extracts reached about 51% for both beans, leaves and peels, showing the potential for using these by-products as extraction materials. In addition, experimental results showed that CGA extract could be added to instant coffee powder (under 100mg CGA for 1-1.5g of instant coffee powder), creating an effective weight loss support drink. The project was accepted by the Department of Science and Technology of Dak Nong with positive results. |
