Focus on regenerating and protecting aquatic resources
In order to maintain biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods for people living on aquaculture and fisheries, Can Tho City is actively implementing many programs and activities to raise awareness and action among the community and mobilize the whole society to "join hands" in protecting and developing aquatic resources.

Actively regenerate aquatic resources.

Over the years, with the active involvement of all levels and functional agencies in Can Tho City, the support of organizations and individuals inside and outside the city, and functional agencies at the central level, the movement of releasing aquatic species into the natural environment in the city has grown stronger. Every year, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Traditional Day of the Vietnamese Fisheries Industry, the Department of Agriculture and Environment (NN&MT) of Can Tho City not only coordinates with localities to release fish into the natural environment but also promotes information, propaganda, rallies, and launches campaigns to call on the whole population to participate in the regeneration, protection, and development of aquatic resources.

To commemorate the 67th anniversary of the Traditional Day of the Vietnamese Fisheries Industry (April 1, 1959 - April 1, 2026), the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, in coordination with the Vietnam Buddhist Association of Can Tho City and the People's Committee of Tran De Commune, organized a rally and released fry to replenish aquatic resources at Tran De Fishing Port. On this occasion, 3 million tiger shrimp fry and other aquatic species were released into the wild, contributing to the regeneration and restoration of aquatic resources.

Ms. Quach Thi Thanh Binh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, said: "The activity of releasing fish and aquatic species back into nature is very meaningful, contributing to replenishing the population, creating ecological balance, and diversifying species. This is an activity aimed at raising awareness and responsibility of the people in protecting the environment and enhancing biodiversity...".

According to Ms. Quach Thi Thanh Binh, in recent years, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City has regularly coordinated with agencies, organizations, local authorities, and the Vietnam Buddhist Association of Can Tho City in the work of regenerating, conserving, and developing aquatic resources. In 2025, after the merger, the department organized many fish stocking events to regenerate aquatic resources with more than 10 million native aquatic species. The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City also disseminated legal regulations and guided monks, nuns, Buddhists, and people to release fish according to standards, species, and techniques to ensure practical effectiveness.

Raising community awareness and action.

According to Ms. Quach Thi Thanh Binh, to maintain biodiversity and ensure long-term livelihoods for people living on aquaculture and fisheries, residents in the city need to actively participate in protecting, regenerating, and developing aquatic resources and protecting the habitats of aquatic species. Fishermen need to strictly comply with regulations on fisheries exploitation; they should not use destructive fishing methods such as electric shock, explosives, or poisons. The community should work together to monitor and report violations, and participate in protecting aquatic resources. Individuals, organizations, and businesses should cooperate and regularly implement regulations on stocking, resource regeneration, protecting breeding and growth areas of aquatic species, and promoting the application of science and technology to develop aquaculture in a safe and sustainable manner. In particular, strengthening the implementation of regulations on protecting aquatic resources and combating IUU fishing is considered an urgent task, of decisive importance for the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

Aquaculture is one of the key economic sectors contributing to job creation and income for many people in Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta provinces. However, due to the impacts of climate change, environmental degradation, and overexploitation by humans, natural aquatic resources are declining.

According to Mr. Tran Chi Hung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, the fisheries sector is facing many difficulties and challenges such as declining natural resources, the impact of climate change, saltwater intrusion, environmental pollution, and the increasingly high demands of the international market for quality and traceability. In this context, the regeneration of fisheries resources is becoming even more urgent and has long-term significance. All levels, sectors, and localities need to strengthen the management and protection of fisheries resources. They should intensify patrols and inspections, strictly punish destructive fishing practices, and put an end to the use of prohibited fishing gear and illegal fishing. Strictly enforcing regulations against IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing is crucial, ensuring no violations occur, contributing to maintaining national prestige and ensuring the sustainable development of the fisheries sector...
