Workshop of "Sustainable development of the Mekong Delta in the context of climate change - opportunities and challenges"
On July 14, 2017, at Dong Ha fortuneland Hotel, it took place a workshop of "Sustainable development of the Mekong Delta in the context of climate change - opportunities and challenges" was organized by the Ministry of Planning and Investment. The workshop is part of the program of the project "Combat general climate resistance and sustainable livelihoods in the Mekong Delta."


Attending the workshop, there were Vice Minister of Planning and Investment Dang Huy Dong; Mr. Vu Quang Cac - Director of Planning Management Department; with more than 100 delegates representing departments in Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho city and Mekong Delta provinces.


Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Dang Huy Dong delivered the opening speech and presided the workshop. He presented brief comments on the current situation of climate change in the world in general and the Mekong Delta region in particular is complicated. The Deputy Minister said that the Mekong Delta is a key agricultural and food security area of ​​the country, so climate change adaptation in the Mekong Delta is very necessary.


Mr. Dang Huy Dong, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, delivered the opening speech.


Mr. Vu Quang Cac, representative of the sixth Sub-project Management Board "The Master Plan for Comprehensive Infrastructure Development for Climate Change Adaptation serving the Socio-economic Development of the Mekong Delta" presented Issues related to infrastructure adaptation to climate change today. He pointed out the limitations and weaknesses of planning as the interconnections among branches and levels are not tight; there is no long-term vision for disaster response and response to climate change. From the above difficulties, he also came up with a specific goal is to create a comprehensive strategic framework for the Mekong Delta in the implementation of infrastructure development plans to motivate Socio-economic development in the coming time.

Also in the workshop, representatives of relevant agencies also presented the issue of response to climate change in parallel with agricultural development in the Mekong Delta.

Throughout the workshop, participants agreed on the use of land and water resources in the area that needed to make appropriate adjustments in the direction of protecting local natural and ecological resources. At the same time, provinces in the Mekong Delta must make greater efforts to control and reduce the deterioration of the environment quality in production and social services, contributing to the socio-economic growth of the coming period.
