According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luong, Deputy General Director of VTV, the copyright purchase price of foreign television channels has increased sharply, increasing by 30% each year, which because VTVcab has changed a series of international channels. In the morning of April 13, 2018, Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan and VTV General Director Tran Binh Minh presided the working session between senior leaders of MIC and VTV. At the meeting concerning the management of paid television services, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luong, VTV's deputy general director, pointed out that pay television companies are facing difficulties when agents of monopoly Distribution of foreign television channels pinching prices, rising prices in the past years.
According to current regulations, pay-TV providers must purchase the copyrights of international television channels through domestic distribution agents to ensure that the state manages and collects taxes from these businesses.
Due to the fact that each foreign television channel designates only one exclusive distributor in Vietnam, it can be said that the distribution agents enjoy the monopoly. This monopoly makes the pay television units in Vietnam are pinched, there is no other choice in negotiating the copyright purchase of international channels.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luong, television agencies have to buy foreign television channels through distribution agents in Vietnam, which have exclusive distribution rights, hence there are exclusive rights to manipulate copyright prices. |
