Explosive detection by using polymer materials
Scientists at Ho Chi Minh City Polytechnic University have successfully synthesized the new conjugated oligomer compound material T3THP with spectroscopic absorption, applied in the detection of explosives Nitro - Aromatic family.

Currently, detecting materials for TNT and DNT explosives have not been researched and developed in Vietnam. Explosive detection methods often use some methods, such as olfactory, sensors, or modern analyzers.

In which, using modern equipment for fast, accurate results and capable of detecting explosive materials with low material content. However, this method requires expensive analytical equipment, complicated operation and maintenance, so not all agencies and units have the conditions to equip, especially in remote and border areas, islands - where smuggling of explosives regularly occurs. Therefore, the flexibility of this method is not high, in an emergency it is not feasible. In addition, the analysis of explosives compounds is mainly based on the comparison of spectroscopic measurements with standard substances. Meanwhile, if mixing explosives with other compounds, the spectroscopic analysis will have many difficulties in identifying explosives compounds.

The use of olfactory detecting is low cost, flexible but its detection capacity is not high, often overlooked.

For sensor technology, low cost, flexible, fast accurate results, low concentrations of explosives can be detected. However, it requires precise sample preparation, good preparation of measuring electrodes. In this technique, chemical and luminescent sensors have remarkable advantages.

In the research methods of making nitro aromatic spacer explosives detection materials, such as TNT, DNT, ..., at present, the fabrication of polymer materials has many potentials and is simple to perform.

Accordingly, photosensitive polymer materials will interact with nitro-family explosives, thanks to the fluorescence resonant energy transfer (FRET) effect, these polymers will change colors differently and the luminescence is extinguished when have explosives.

Before that fact, the authors of Ho Chi Minh City Polytechnic University made the project “Study on synthesis of luminescent polymeric / oligomer materials for use as sensors in their nitro-aromatic.”

The research results of the research open up the production direction of materials and equipment for fast detection of inflammable and explosive substances. The The project was accepted by the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City in the past year.
