The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development proposes to develop a pilot policy and mechanism for paying results-based carbon credits for specialized farming areas and allow this revenue to be used to support farmer households, cooperatives and businesses participating in the Project of 1 million hectares of rice in the Mekong Delta, and does not have to contribute to the emission reductions committed in Vietnam's National Self-Determination Contribution (NDC).

In the afternoon of August 28, 2023, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang had a working session with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) on many contents, including the Project "Sustainable development of 1 million specialized hectares of rice in high-quality rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta.
Report on the draft project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares specializing in high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta until 2030", Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam said. The project aims to build a high-quality, emission-reducing rice-growing area with an area of 300 thousand hectares by 2025 and strive to reach 1 million hectares by 2030.
The project aims to implement sustainable rice farming, including reducing the amount of seed, fertilizer, and water use to ensure emission reduction; reorganizing production, with about 1 million hectares of rice, there will be over 1 million farming households. The implementation of the project aims to organize farmer households into cooperatives to implement linkages.
The project also aims at environmental protection and green growth, and at the same time, aims to increase income for rice farmers through reducing costs and increasing the value of rice; strive to build a rice brand to reduce emissions, and etc.
Based on the results of the Project "Sustainable Agricultural Transformation in Vietnam (VnSAT), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development calculates that the project will need $650 million in funding. |
