Biotechnology helps to create many new plant varieties
On August 8, 2024, Science and Technology Information and Statistics Center (CESTI, under the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City) organized a workshop on "Biotechnology for plant breeding". The workshop aimed to report and analyze trends in applying biotechnology in selecting and breeding plant varieties, combined with sharing some experiences and solutions from scientists, with the ability to deploy applications in agricultural production activities, helping managers and businesses have more information about trends in research and application of biotechnology at home and abroad to select and breed plant varieties.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Duc Tuan - Director of the Center for Information and Statistics on Science and Technology emphasized that research and development of new varieties in the past century is an important step to help increase crop productivity by over 50%. In particular, biotechnology allows "creating desired genetic variations", changing genetic material accurately and quickly, creating mutant populations at low cost, overcoming many barriers.

In Vietnam, there are 197 patents registered for protection. Mr. Nguyen Duc Tuan hopes that the workshop will be a bridge for scientists to introduce technological solutions and models, share implementation experiences with businesses and people, thereby helping crops to better withstand adverse conditions, improve productivity and quality of agricultural products, bring better economic efficiency and develop sustainable agriculture.

Reporting on biotechnology trends for plant breeding based on international patent data, MSc. Nguyen Thi Minh Thu - information analyst (Center for Information and Statistics on Science and Technology) said that as of July 2024, there were 43,242 patents applying biotechnology for plant breeding registered for protection worldwide.

Of these, 50% of the research is directed towards food crops, 14% towards vegetables. According to the WIPO Publish database of the National Office of Intellectual Property, there are 197 inventions/utility solutions referring to biotechnology serving plant breeding that have been registered for protection in Vietnam. Of these, 52 inventions/utility solutions have applicants from research institutes, universities, and enterprises. The trend of biotechnology research serving plant breeding still focuses on tissue culture techniques, while techniques such as molecular markers and genetic engineering are still quite modest.
