Applying biotechnology to select and create high-yield, good-quality cucumber, bitter melon, and green bean varieties for Can Tho city
In the morning of August 9, 2024, Can Tho City Department of Science and Technology held a meeting of the Council for acceptance of the city-level science and technology task on a project "Application of biotechnology to select and create high-yield, high-quality cucumber, bitter melon, and green bean varieties for Can Tho City."

The Council was presided by Mr. Truong Hoang Phuong - Deputy Director of the Can Tho City Department of Science and Technology. The study was carried by Dr. Nguyen Trong Phuoc. The Mekong Delta High-Tech Agricultural Research Institute was an implementing agency.

The project aims to complete the technological process of selecting and creating 3 varieties: cucumber, bitter melon, and green beans with high yield and good quality; Develop a production process for 3 types of original seeds with the ability to resist diseases or withstand high pest pressure and meet market requirements; Develop a cultivation model for each variety in Can Tho City.

After more than 30 months of implementation, the project has identified the genes that determine the number of fruits/plant, as well as the length and width of fruits on the bean plant in the F2 and F3 populations of the Alubia/OSU5446 hybrid combination. Genetic indicators show that this combination has high potential for the number of fruits/plant, thereby helping to improve crop yield for the next generation. In particular, 27 molecular markers were detected on the OP04 chromosome and 1 marker on the PV09, allowing analysis of the genetic pattern of the hybrids in the F8 generation. After evaluation, 7 selected lines carry homozygous dominant genes corresponding to the paternal gene (OSU5446), especially Line 3 (F2-95-15-6-1-2-14) and Line 7 (F2-1-74-24-50-2-36) showing high fruit yield. This result is an important foundation for future selection of bean varieties in the Mekong Delta region.

The research results of the project have value and are directly applicable to research and seed production activities in the Mekong Delta. The Council unanimously accepted the project. However, the research team needs to edit some of the report content according to the comments of the Council members.
